  • Heritage Baptist Church E-Devotionals - Feb. 4,2012 - Pastor Bob Barton February 4, 2012
OH THAT I MIGHT SEE GOD! Throughout the Bible there are amazing passages of those who "saw God". The book of Job ends with one of my favorites. What is so amazing about the reactions of those who SEE God is not what they say but how they say it. They are clearly CHANGED by seeing Him.Job, had challenged and frankly accused God. Now, I know God gets […]

Pastor Bob Barton has been serving at Heritage Baptist Church since January, 2002.  As Heritage’s founding pastor, he was instrumental in articulating our theology and doctrine, as well as our intergenerational ministry philosophy and vision. Pastor Barton received Christ as his Savior in 1979, at the age of 16.  He went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, and spent 7 years as a Tactical Intelligence Officer in the US Army. Pastor Barton has served in discipleship ministry since 1984, and in pastoral ministry for the past 15 years.  He has been involved in helping other churches and ministries develop and grow, teaching in personal evangelism, ministering in ten different countries cross-culturally, as well as teaching and preaching in Bible training centers here and abroad.  Bob and his wife, Pam, have been married for over 20 years.  After he faced cancer, and was told he may never have children, God saw fit to bless he and Pam with one son, Billy, who now serves with his parents at Heritage as Minister of Music.

Of his own heart for the ministry, Pastor Barton says, “After being converted, I fell in love with the Bible. Being one who loved to teach already, I hungered to read it, study it and then teach it, or share with others what the Lord had given me. The thrill and the power of God’s Magnificent Word combined with His remarkable plan of discipleship for the world became increasingly intoxicating. I began my ministry as a young man holding in-home Bible studies and building relationships with others as I endeavored to invest my life in theirs. This extended to teaching Sunday School Classes, serving as a church deacon and then filling the pulpit for my pastor as a preacher.

Some time later, I was exposed to revival history and more teaching on the crucified life. This was used by the Lord to draw my heart toward a life of full-time vocational ministry. At the same time, I was growing in my understanding of church history and God’s view of, and will fo the church (His Bride). This was the catalyst for my calling to pastoral ministry and the shepherding of Christ’s flock.

Thus, our Lord has burdened my heart for the authentic, abundant, spirit-filled Christian life marked by a personal, intimate and passionate love for, and relationship with, Jesus Christ which gives birth to a revived local assembly longing to depart from modern mediocrity and to pursue a life of abiding in Jesus, magnifying Him and impacting the world for His glory.

This is my heartbeat … this is my calling.”

Your servant for Christ’s glory,
Bob Barton

Pastor Dexter Taylor has been serving as co-pastor at Heritage Baptist Church since June, 2009.  He accepted Christ as Savior 35 years ago, and since then has served in full time ministry for nearly 30 years, most of them as senior pastor.  He received his BS in Pastoral Theology from Hyles-Anderson College in Crown Point, Indiana. Pastor Taylor and his wife, Maribeth, have been married for 40 years, and have been blessed with 6 children, 2 of them in heaven.  He says that there have been many trophies of God’s grace in the churches that he has pastored over the years, but these were in addition to what the Lord has done in his family, not at the expense of his family.Pastor Taylor is known for his faithful godly testimony, his heart of love for others, and his servant spirit.  He sees the responsibility and ministry our Lord has given him as three fold, as found  in Matthew 28:16-20. When Christ met with His disciples after His resurrection His instructions to them were to make disciples of all nations, and baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. The Lord’s disciples were then to teach the new disciples to observe ALL things whatsoever He had commanded them.  This being said, the responsibility and ministry consists of making disciples (winning people to Christ), baptizing them, and teaching them the whole counsel of God. Part of this whole counsel of God is discipling people to win souls and to disciple others.

Of his own heart for the ministry, Pastor Taylor says, “Since coming to Heritage Baptist Church in June of 2009, I have learned many things, one of which is the concept of being a co-pastor. I have always seen the position of pastor as a singular position. I could not think beyond the box of a singular pastoral position. Since coming to Heritage and being a co-laborer with Pastor Barton, whom I have known since 1997, I have come to understand that two men can work together as a team. As long as both men are willing to share the burden, the responsibilities, and blessings realizing it’s God’s church not ours, things will go great. It has been wonderful to work and serve with Brother Barton. It has been wonderful to work and serve with the people of Heritage. They have been very sensitive to our needs as well as faithful to apply truths that our Lord has taught them through the preaching of God’s Word. That in itself is a great blessing to any pastor. Being here is and has been a breath of fresh air to me and to my Sweetheart. I thank our Lord and Brother Barton for the opportunity to be here and serve this great congregation.”

Serving Our Lord Faithfully Until He Calls or Comes,
Brother Taylor

Pastor Taylor has been a tremendous blessing and encouragement to the people of Heritage Baptist Church, and although he was loved immediately when he came, their love for him and his family has grown during his time here as pastor.
